    but the waiting feels fine
As usual, life on the island is slower and full of silences. It is nice but sometimes it does feel like I am enduring my own healing and regeneration. Simultaneously, PEI is a surreal encounter with myself via my relatives. I laugh a lot. It's the most divine survival mechanism.

Oh and there's always lots of television involved. So much more than I can handle, but somehow I cannot stop watching. Living in a house with a tv always reminds me why I will never ever own one of my own. Instead I'll fill my life with other activities... like cabaret performances.

    Speaking of which...

Here are some pictures of Mini Maul (aka Johnny Forever) as Nancy and Douche La Douche as Susan: the turkey stuffing housewives. Backstage at Cafe Cleopatre for the Tits the Season Burlesque show.

Powers of Ten / The Known Universe / Cosmic View
This amazing video which is doing the rounds:

is actually I'm betting inspired by this 1977 Charles and Ray Eames classic - pre CGI, pre Star Wars. One of my favourite films of all time...either that or the IMAX Cosmic Voyage which owes a lot to both films and book even using the Powers of Ten.

which in turn I've just found out was based on this 1968 Canadian film:

Which was based on this 1957 book. Phew! I feel exhausted by all that zooming...

Painting the Town Red, one bum @ a time
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) has launched a program called Pain the Town Red. The premise is simple: decorate your residence or workplace in red to show Canadian athletes they have our support at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. I've got my stash of stuff for our apartment ready for February...that's covered nicely. In the run-up to the announcement of the Team Canada (athlete) uniforms I was hopeful there'd be a few pieces that will help paint me red. And while I like the line I was more than a little disappointed that little of it was in proper feuille d'erable red. But it's still miles ahead of the vomitous Beijing uniform fiasco (avert.your.eyes). Over the last several months I've acquired lots of stuff, particularly lots of shirts. I've the ossomess maple leaf toque for years, but I managed to find a less insulated alternative, since most of my tickets are indoors. In fact, I'll only be at one outdoor event: the women's aerials final on Cypress Mountain. But jaysus finding something to wear outside in a nice bright ribald nationalist red...bupkis. Nada. I tried for a waterproof anorak to wear over a proper jacket, nope. Then I stumbled upon this: Perfect, and not too expensive. Thanks LL BEAN!

    Ultimate Thrush at Optimo!

Thrash dance! Straight after the Cry Parrot Xmas party we all went down to Optimo to see the best band in Glasgow tear the roof off the best club in Glasgow. They didn't disappoint! The mosh pit was mighty, and Twitch said Optimo and the Sub Club had never seen a pit like it before. It ended in a huge pile on, which I refrained from taking part in to save folk from injury. Here's a clip of the madness:

CRY PARROT w/ HAWNAY TROOF & me!
On the 6th of December I did a live set for the Cry Parrot Xmas party, at the intimate basement venue the Black Sparrow, a show which was headlined by this dude HAWNAY TROOF.

His show was excellent, he's a real firecracker with a lot of energy, a nice line in Prince knock-off attire, and some excellent shoes. I managed to get a few of his CDs too, which don't disappoint either. It's slightly Beastie Boys, but Beastie Boys if they had bothered to keep up with modern music and not get lost in some dusty crates somewhere. So there's bits of booty bass in there, as well as a sprinkling of disco dust, and some shouting on top. He's now on tour with Peaches I believe, man that will be some show. If he comes to your town, I recommend you check Hawnay Troof out! Oh yeah and I almost forgot to mention, that's not his real name - his real name is Vice Cooler. So there.

    DREAM ON Mixtape
I have made a new mixtape for your aural delectation. Consider it an early Christmas present!

It's called "Dream On" and all the tracks have a very dreamy/psychedelic ambience. It's mostly modern and vintage electronica, with a splash of psyche-pop for good measure. And in case you are wondering, it's called a "mixtape" as opposed to a "mix" because no actual blending of two tunes happens, which to me is what defines a "mix". I hope you like it!

You can download it from here: http://www.littlerockrecords.com/promo/DREAMONMixtapre.zip

    And here is the tracklisting:

    BEN BUTLER & MOUSE PAD - E-Ship
    TODD RUNDGREN - International Feel
TODD RUNDGREN - Never Never Land
FRANZ FERDINAND - Ulysses (FoxGut Reshuffle)
    BJORN TORSKE - Brus
BRUCE HAACK - National Anthem To The Moon
    NITE JEWEL - Kamera Songs
    EYES - Clown Lady
    LOUTS - The Bubbles
THE BEACH BOYS - Fall Breaks and Back To Winter
SYNTHESIZERS UNLIMITED - Luxury Life Styles
    MIAOUX MIAOUX - Hrvatski
    CHROMATICS - In The City
    DAFT PUNK - Night Vision
JOHN MAUS - Do Your Best
    DESIRE - Under Your Spell
    PHANTOM BAND - Island

It's been a work week of fire-putting-out and mostly they're out. However one of the side effects will be a meeting next Thursday morning. Yes, Xmas Eve. Anyone working in higher ed knows this is heresy. Damned heresy be damned. N'importe.

En route I stopped to pick up some new runners. I also stopped and picked up removable finger gloves (for working in the warehouse at VANOC), a new Santa hat, and a stocking stuffer for The Dude. Also today I got from both ends sides: left arm H1N1, right arm H0N0. I'm certainly having a reaction, but it's manageable. And Himself organized dinner.

I'm doing laundry. Well, the dryer is drying it; I'm about to fold it. My ongoing search for tighty-whiteys remains fruitless.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!
*EDIT* I wasn't going to post this today but then I realised it was Santa hat day so here it is:

Last Thursday I dressed up as Santa for the Che Camille Christmas party, which was fun if a bit tiring. They had a grotto and an elf all done up for me, and various people came over during the evening to sit on my knee and have their photo taken. I believe some of the ladies even found Santa oddly attractive! Those photos aren't online yet, but there's a review of the evening over at Style Scanner:

    Film fun 2009: ROBO-GEISHA
Here's a trailer for a new film from the Machine Girl/TGP team, called "ROBO-GEISHA". It marries the ultra-violence of TGP to the camp fun of Austin Powers. It's not out yet, but I can't wait to see it. The trailer is definitely NSFW, so click play at your own peril!

This is the site where we found Tokyo Gore Police being streamed, after being tipped off to the wiggyness by Kepa:

There's an excellent selection, and you can donate on the sidebar to keep the site going. Also, I would recommend watching the films in Japanese with English subtitles, as some of the English dubs I have seen of Tokyo Gore Police miss out all the jokes (it is a pretty damn funny film, in a pitch black way).

    folsom prison blues
The last month and a half has passed so quickly. First it was a mad dash to finish a bunch of projects in time to leave for Vancouver. Then it was 12 whirlwind days out west (you all already know how that was). Then back to Montreal for 12 days which I thought were going to be quiet and restful but actually involved lots of work, preparing and performing in a 2 day Christmas burlesque cabaret, various chosen family holidays parties/meals, dealing with emotional trauma surrounding my friend who was in an accident and my uncle dying, 5 house guests (Nanochrist, a metal band from Toronto crashed with us for 2 days), a radio interview for the new show 'hochelaga goddamn' (care of jojo and c.t.) and fabulously overindulgent romance.

Now I'm on Prince Edward Island with my family for the next 13 days of holiday cheer.... well, cheer and Wilfred's funeral. *sigh* That's a whole other drama that involves having gotten into a terrible fight with my uncle Cecil. Cecil is the self-proclaimed (and self-righteous) head of the family. He is unrelenting in his decision to organize a Catholic funeral for Wilfred, mostly (I believe) because it would be scandalous on conservative PEI to do any different. I believe it's a final and irreparable insult to a man whom our family never understood, respected or loved (for who he actually was). Wilfred was discarded by his family and society and now that he's dead it's like my family is choosing to recuperate him with a little bit of white wash. Amazing how a life time of being the black sheep can be fixed with simple religious ceremony that Wilfred would have NEVER EVER WANTED FOR HIMSELF. *sigh* In the end, I am sick of fighting and have decided (for the sake of not upsetting my father who already has such a hard time due to his own illness) that i am going to keep my anger quiet. I have also decided to never speak with my uncle Cecil again. Honestly, if I can choose to make non-blood relations a part of my family emotionally, then I can do the opposite and cut off a blood relation who really is a violent presence in my life, no? Fuck, sometimes it gives me great comfort that I look more like my mother's family than my father's.

Basically, life has been mildly overwhelming. I am very lucky to have had some excellent support from some amazing people in my life. I know that i try to be a tough mommy most of the time, but I was so thankful that Johnny was there when I got the call about my uncle. When I tell you that I crumpled into that tiny person's lap, I say so with no understanding of how i could possibly fit, but with so much gratitude that i did. I have great anxiety around expressing negative emotions publicly and I worry that if I am not always happy or amusing or funny, that I will find myself abandoned. It's good to know that I do have folks who stick around through thick and thin, even if some don't.

All (extended)family drama aside, I am glad to be on the Island again. Earl Grey has been traded in for boiled orange pekoe and I've already played at least a dozen hands of gin with my father. We had a lovely family supper right after my arrival last night. It was nice to be sitting around the table with my folks, my sister and her bf Jamie. My mother was so proud of herself for having really tried to make a meal that took my vegetarianism into consideration... but she bungled it badly. She knew that I don't eat caesar salad so she made a second salad, but then put caesar dressing on it, not realizing that it's the dressing that has anchovies in it. Then she cooked baby carrots, but poured them into the same dish as the roast when she served them, essentially bathing them in animal fat ("Boo, can't you just pick them out?" "No mom, I'm sorry"). In the end, I basically ate bread and cheese. That's how it is on PEI for me. I always return to MTL with a seriously fucked up stomach and a protein deficiency.

    BUT!

Oh my Lordy did my sister ever come through! She arrived this morning with the best possible Christmas present. Angie and Daddy went grocery shopping for me before I woke up! They bought 4 bags worth of vegetarian friendly food. Butternut squash, vege beef strips and chicken breasts, vegetarian spring rolls, bell peppers, avocados, cucumber... so many good things! They even bought vege chicken nuggets for me because, apparently, Dad said "she always used to like chicken mcnuggets when she was little." Holy fuck, I nearly misted up.
